WikiLeaks has just posted the Afghanistan War Diaries, a collection of over 90,000 official documents covering the past six years of the U.S. War in Afghanistan. The White House is responding by arguing that the release of the documents endangers American lives; this was the same argument that Bush consistently used whenever the media revealed post-9/11 initiatives that he preferred to keep hidden, and the same argument Nixon used to condemn the release of the Pentagon Papers in 1971.
All of these administrations have ignored a key fact: If the American media can access this information, then so, directly or indirectly, can enemies of the United States. If they documents are already insecure enough to be published, then the American public may as well read them.
The latest batch of documents suggests that Pakistan has been aiding anti-U.S. forces in Afghanistan, which may also help to explain why Osama bin Laden has been able to evade capture for the past 9 years.
